Salisbury Woman Cited with Neglect of Horse

The following information was provided by the Salisbury Township Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Lehigh County Humane Society officials are investigating a report of a Salisbury Township woman who was arrested and cited with neglecting her horse's hooves, according to the Salisbury Township Police Department. Sandra Almgren, 73, of 1324 Fairview Road, was cited Sept. 27 for neglecting the care of a horse she kept at 1985 Black River Road, police said. Police said Almgren was supposed to get veterinary care for the horse, who needed medication for his hooves, police said. When officials returned to check on the horse, Almgren had allegedly not gotten treatment for the horse and the condition of his hooves was worse, police said. A previous case of horse neglect in Plainfield Township garnered headlines in June when officials seized 15 …

Neglected Horse was Pregnant with Twins, Loses Both

Neglected and injured horse seized from Plainfield Township property was pregnant with twins; medical personnel are able to save mom, but not the babies.

One of the neglected horses seized Monday night from a private property in Plainfield Township was pregnant -- with twins. According to a report in The Express-Times, the medical personnel at Last Chance Ranch in Richland Township were able to save mom, but not the babies. In addition to not having access to clean water, the brown mare had suffered a broken leg. According to Jackie Burke of Last Chance Ranch, the break is an old injury that fused. Officer Scott E. Zabriskie said animal cruelty charges will be filed within the next two weeks against the owner, Dominic Deflorio, 63, of Princeton, N.J. In total, 15 horses belonging to Deflorio were seized from the property at 5326 Kesslersville Road. Police were called to the scene on …

It is my whole hearted opinion that Dominic Deflorio has no place on this earth. He needs to be destroyed. Sure is a shame we cannot take him by helicopter to the middle of the ocean and drop him off. How horrid for those poor helpless horses. Thank God there are good people in this world but evidently the evil outnumber the good. Dominic Deflorio should suffer. Horribly. Not just a slap on the …   more ›

15 Neglected Horses Taken to Last Chance Ranch

Horses rescued from Northampton County property are expected to recover from injuries and lack of food, water and shelter

Fifteen horses found on a Northampton County property without food, water or shelter are recuperating at an animal rescue center and are expected to be OK. The horses were taken to Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown. A vet examined all of the horses today, said Jackie Burke of Last Chance Ranch. Care for the animals is expected to cost at least $10,000. Donations can be made via the ranch's secure website or by calling the ranch at 215-538-2510. One horse has an open wound with exposed bone. The animal is scheduled to have surgery on Friday to clean and repair the wound. The wound was infested with maggots when the horse was rescued. Another horse suffered a broken leg but the vet discovered that the break is an old injury which has fused. …

Neglected, Wounded Horses Seized in Plainfield

Mare with broken leg was being held up by other horses before police removed it. Colt with open, infested leg sore also removed from waterless ranch to receive veterinary care.

Two neglected horses that were suffering with serious leg injuries and “in dire need of veterinary care” that the owner was unwilling to provide were seized from a private property by Plainfield Township police Monday night, according to court records. One brown colt had a leg wound that maggots were eating through and exposing bone. The other horse, a brown mare, had suffered a broken leg. But like something out of a Disney movie, other horses in a 15-animal herd that occupy the property were helping the wounded mare to stay upright, according to an application for a search warrant on file at District Judge Joseph Barner’s office. The officer who filed the warrant, Scott E. Zabriskie, wrote that he “believes the seizure of the … two …
